Non Food Packaging
How does Tchibo make its Non-Food packaging more sustainable?
Our products come in packaging that protects them on the way to stores, supermarkets, or customers, and is printed with all necessary product information. Customers must dispose of the packaging after unpacking; the production of packaging requires large amounts of resources, and the waste pollutes the environment.
We continuously optimize all our packaging and apply several levers:
Material reduction
We are reducing the amount of material used: In 2020, we eliminated plastic bags for textile products as a measure to reduce packaging. In 2021, we further reduced packaging for many non-food items.
Recyclability
To ensure the materials can be reused, we are continuously improving the recyclability of our packaging. For non-food items, 98% of the packaging is already recyclable. Examples of non-recyclable packaging that we are still working on include cushioning materials such as Styrofoam for protecting furniture and packaging for our jewelry.
Material selection
We use materials from certified, responsible sources: We rely on materials from certified sustainable sources, such as cardboard certified according to the criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®). We are also gradually increasing our use of recycled materials. This applies to both larger packaging, such as our shipping bag, which is made from at least 80% recycled plastic waste, and smaller packaging components, such as the elastic bands in our textile packaging, which have contained recycled material since 2021.
