Energy and electricity
From roasting coffee to the lighting in our stores to the packaging of Tchibo products in our warehouses: energy is an essential resource in our business. However, the use of fossil energy sources releases critical greenhouse gases, so a transition to CO2-free, renewable energy sources is essential. These are not yet available in sufficient quantities. Therefore, it is all the more important to keep all consumption as low as possible and use energy more efficiently.

Use of green electricity
Our locations in Germany have been supplied with certified electricity from 100% renewable energy sources since 2008. This applies to our two roasteries in Hamburg and Berlin, the distribution centers in Gallin and Neumarkt, the company headquarters in Hamburg, and all Tchibo stores in Germany, for which we purchase the electricity ourselves. Since 2015, all locations in Austria and, where possible, the stores have also been supplied with green electricity. Since 2021, the warehouse in Cheb (Czech Republic) and our roaster in Marki (Poland) have also been supplied with electricity from renewable sources. In 2017, we initiated an energy-saving process at our distribution center in Gallin, which we are continuously continuing. For example, we implemented an energy management system with an improved metering concept. Heating pipes in the outgoing goods area were insulated. Furthermore, the lighting in many areas was optimized and converted to LED.
Energy management system according to ISO 50 001
In July 2025, we completed the implementation of a comprehensive, certified energy management system according to ISO 50 001 at Tchibo GmbH in Germany. This means that in addition to the roasteries, the Tchibo headquarters, the German branches, and the German logistics locations are now part of our management system. This helps us record and monitor consumption, derive measures, and, on this basis, minimize consumption and increase efficiency.
The implementation of the energy management system is an essential component of the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG), which came into force in 2023 and also applies to us as Tchibo GmbH. In addition to legal compliance, the energy management system according to ISO 50 001 contributes to our Tchibo climate targets and the EU's energy and climate protection targets. It is closely linked to our climate strategy and the targeted energy efficiency targets.
Energy goals
Tchibo's total energy consumption has steadily declined in recent years. This was achieved primarily through lower natural gas consumption in the roasteries and German stores. Electricity consumption has also declined in the roasteries, stores, and administration.
Despite this, our goal remains to save energy. To achieve our energy reduction target, the following energy-saving measures are planned, for example:
- Increasing energy efficiency in the roasteries
- Gradually converting the vehicle fleet to e-mobility
- Expanding LED lighting at headquarters and in stores in Germany
- Energy-saving measures through green IT
