5 Cups a Day

#131 Glitter bingo: About coffee in showbiz!

What do bingo, glittery suits and cappuccino have to do with concentration, attitude and joie de vivre? Quite a lot - at least for Hendrik Menken, entertainer, presenter, PR professional and cult figure on the German bingo scene for over 20 years.

In the new Christmas episode of "5 cups a day", Hendrik alias Ricardo M. is a guest and talks to presenter Ralf Podszus about his life between stage and backstage and about his great passion: coffee. Six strong cappuccinos a day are not an exception for him, but the rule. Always with three shots. Always WITHOUT cocoa powder.

Hendrik takes us behind the scenes of show business and tells us why coffee is much more than just a stimulant for him.

"There's something soothing about the smell of coffee for me - it's arriving, it's being completely with myself." Hendrik Menken

Alcohol plays no role for him in show business. For Hendrik, energy, focus and the ability to improvise come exclusively from coffee. Before performances, a cup of coffee helps him to collect himself, ground himself and block out the hustle and bustle around him.

But this episode is much more than just a conversation about caffeine. Hendrik talks about his journey from a bar in St. Pauli to sold-out shows, about the art of improvisation and about why self-irony and consciously not taking things too seriously are key to successful performances. His bingo is just the common thread - singing, humour and encounters make it a real show experience.

A special place in his heart belongs to Italy, Umbria to be precise. Hendrik lives there from time to time, enjoying the espresso culture on the piazza, cappuccino even in the afternoon (to the amazement of the locals) and finding the peace and quiet among the olive groves that balances out the glamour of life on stage.

Social issues are not neglected either: Hendrik talks about his optimistic talk "The glass is half full here!", about the power of positive perspectives and about his commitment to the Welcoming Out diversity initiative. For him, openness, humour and attitude belong together - on stage and in everyday life.

The festive episode concludes with Christmas rituals, special coffee places in Hamburg hotel lobbies, Umbria in winter and the question of what really matters: Spending time together, experiencing culture and laughing together. His appeal is perfect for the run-up to Christmas:

"Let the colourful bird out and don't always take yourselves so seriously." Hendrik Menken
