5 Cups a Day
Refurbished (2/2)

#129 A second life for our Tchibo IT

In the second instalment of our "Refurbished" series on "5 cups a day", we are scouring the Tchibo offices in search of disused laptops, smartphones and iPads...

Because what happens to the Tchibo laptops and smartphones after they've been decommissioned? Have they always been treated with care? Or are there lots of stickers on the notebook, while the iPad is covered in coffee grounds?

Insert: At the bottom of the text you can find out how you can get your hands on refurbished Tchibo IT devices at a favourable price (Christmas is coming).

First things first: Handling our Tchibo IT devices with care makes a big difference in avoiding electronic waste and actively living sustainability.

Our colleagues from the Digital Workplace, Carsten Grafmann and Sven Rudolph, make sure of this. The Tchibo IT devices are used for an average of five years, after which they are sent to our social partner AfB Social & Green. The great thing is that 69 per cent of the decommissioned laptops and other devices can be reused! AfB employees erase our company data, repair the technology and put the devices back on the market as refurbished models.

AfB Social & Green is Europe's largest non-profit IT company and currently employs over 700 people, around half of whom are severely disabled.

You can of course find out more in our "5 cups a day" podcast episode with Carsten, Sven and Jurij Deperschmidt from AfB Social & Green.

"AfB's goal is to create 500 jobs for people with disabilities, on a permanent basis and subject to social security contributions." Jurij

The circular principle in IT means more than just "making new" - it is part of a comprehensive cultural shift towards circular use. And you can actively contribute to this: make sure you don't use stickers on your devices, put your coffee cups far enough away and avoid eating over your laptops. Small measures like these help to extend the life of devices and prevent the generation of e-waste.

And if you really want to buy a refurbished product now, the AfB Shop offers the perfect opportunity to do so. Similar to other online shops, you can choose from a wide range of devices that have been returned by companies on the website. As a private customer, you can be sure that the devices have gone through tested processes, which guarantees sustainable quality and reliability. In this way, you are not only supporting the environment by purchasing remanufactured technology, but also a non-profit organisation that actively lives social responsibility.
