#122 Coffee, cherries and Kilimanjaro. What is life like on a coffee farm?

Habari from Tanzania!

That means hello in Swahili. Our coffee sommelier Indre spent two months there on a very special coffee farm. How does it feel to live and work on a coffee farm? Our travel fairy provides us with rare insights into Tanzania's first certified organic coffee farm! For example: What do I wear on the coffee farm?

Life on a coffee farm

Machare Coffee Estate was the first certified organic coffee plantation in East Africa and is still the only fully certified organic coffee plantation in Tanzania. On an area of 140 hectares and at an altitude of 1,550 metres, high-quality Arabica coffee is produced on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is home to 311,000 organic coffee trees that produce around 100 tonnes of certified Arabica coffee every year. The focus is on sustainability and innovative cultivation and processing methods.

Many questions are answered in our new podcast episode:

What makes life on Tanzania's Machare Coffee Farm so special? Is there heating on Kilimanjaro? What is everyday life like among the coffee trees? How is traditional coffee properly prepared in Tanzania? And how do people communicate? As you know, the national language is Swahili!

Then there are all the animals that can be seen on the safari: Elephants, giraffes, lions, crocodiles, zebras and the largest chimpanzee population in the world. Or even snakes in the pool. But which cute animal is hidden behind the term bush baby, also known as galagos?

Indre also gives all listeners an insight into the origins of the world of beans. Learn more about picking, processing and drying the coffee cherries.

You can hear all the information about the coffee farm here in the new podcast episode of 5 cups a day!
